What: A free New Year's Day plunge into the Atlantic Ocean.

Who: Hosted by the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the oldest winter bathing organization in the US.

When: January 1st, with registration opening in November

Where: Coney Island Beach, Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.

Cost: The plunge is free, but participants are encouraged to donate to local charities.

Why: To start the new year with a refreshing dip and to raise funds for local non-profits.

Participant information

Registration: Participants must register, typically through a site like RunSignup.

Check-in: Arrive early, as check-in for the plunge typically opens at 10 AM and closes at 1 PM.

Swimming: The swimming portion of the event ends around 2 PM.

Spectators: Spectators are welcome in the area but need a wristband to enter the water.

Advice: The water is just above 40F, so it's a very short and cold dip.
